Computer Vision Syndrome

Dr. Walter Choate is a board-certified eye care specialist serving Nashville, TN, who can provide relief with treatments like Neurolens®. Request a consultation today.

What Is Computer Vision Syndrome?

Computer vision syndrome (CVS) is an eye condition that can occur when you focus on a screen for long, uninterrupted periods of time. This strains the muscles of the eyes, which can result in a number of painful symptoms that can also affect your ability to focus. If you spend two or more uninterrupted hours using a screen each day, you may face a higher risk of developing CVS.

Is Computer Vision Syndrome Permanent?

Some symptoms usually go away with corrected computer use, but other symptoms can continue, requiring prescription eyewear or eye medication. There's never been a better time to visit our optometry practice to discuss your computer vision syndrome issues. Who knows? They might just go away in the blink of an eye!

I've been going to Dr Choate for several years now. After some terrible fitting contacts from another eye dr caused a lot of issues with my eyes, I ended up at his office and was amazed at how well I could see once he fitted me properly for contacts. Literally said "oh my God " out loud the first time I put in contacts he gave me, I didn't know I could see that well haha I've been going ever since. Everyone that works there is so helpful and kind. And Dr Choate is the best. He is funny and knowledgeable and determined to help as much as he possibly can. I look forward to my annual eye exam every year! I would recommend him to anyone.

Neurolens Offers a Solution to Computer Vision Syndrome

Staff with patient using Neurolens

Neurolens® is a type of corrective eyewear designed to address computer vision syndrome and eye misalignment.

When your eyes are not synchronized, the trigeminal nerve (the largest of the cranial nerves, responsible for facial sensation and motor functions such as chewing) must overcompensate to achieve focus. This constant strain, paired with prolonged screen time, can eventually result in the many painful symptoms of computer vision syndrome, such as headaches, neck pain, dry eyes, and light sensitivity.

Neurolens prescription lenses use contoured prisms to compensate for misalignment, relieving strain and the resulting symptoms. These lenses are placed into stylish frames and worn like conventional eyeglasses.

The lenses can be designed to contain both your regular corrective prescription and the necessary correction for misalignment. However, you don't need to have poor eyesight to use the Neurolens product. Neurolens can also benefit those with 20/20 vision. We recommended that our Nashville patients wear their Neurolens glasses at all times, especially when reading or using a digital device.

Neurolens FAQs

Are there any side effects?

It is important to note that while Neurolens does not cause any known lasting side effects, you may experience some mild disorientation during the adjustment period. Adjusting to Neurolens can take anywhere from three days to three weeks. Some have compared this effect to adjusting to progressive lenses.

Will insurance cover Neurolens?

Neurolens is not covered by insurance, but you can use money from a health savings account or flexible spending account to pay for this solution. We also accept financing through CareCredit® to place the benefits of this advanced solution within your budget. Our staff will gladly explain your options during your visit to our Goodlettsville optometry office.

Who is a candidate for Neurolens?

If you spend long hours each day looking at digital screens, are experiencing symptoms such as headaches and dry eyes, and simple relief measures haven't helped, then Neurolens may be a good solution for you.

How do we determine candidacy?

Dr. Choate uses a cutting-edge tracking device to measure your degree of eye misalignment at both near and far distances. If he finds that misalignment contributes to your eye strain symptoms, Neurolens may be the right solution.

A Highly Successful User Experience is Documented With Neurolens

Over 81% of patients suffering from chronic daily headaches reported their symptoms were substantially reduced or “basically gone” after wearing Neurolenses for 90 days.  A Neurolens Computer Vision Syndrome study

This simple exercise from the American Optometric Association is great to help prevent CVS symptoms from starting or getting worse. It also gets you moving around.

Can I Prevent Computer Vision Syndrome?

There are some actions you can take at home to reduce your chances of developing CVS-related symptoms. Dr. Choate may recommend the following:

Let There Be Light

Make sure your home or office workspace is properly lit. The darker the room, the more likely you'll strain your eyes while staring at a bright digital screen. So open the shades to let in sunlight or turn on a lamp or two.

Goodbye Glare

Reflected light bouncing off your screen can be hard to see through, causing eye strain. Invest in an anti-glare screen cover or position room lights so they don't shine directly on your computer.

Practice Perfect Posture

Keep your back straight and head level when sitting and working. Slouching and constantly moving your head up and down can cause shoulder, back, and neck pain. A convertible standing/sit down desk can also help.

Screen Location

The center of your computer screen should be about five inches below eye level and about two feet in front of you. This will help reduce eye strain and improve your neck position.

Remember to Blink

It may sound silly, but make a note to yourself to blink while working. Studies show that we blink less frequently while staring at digital screens, increasing uncomfortable dry eye symptoms.

Try Unplugging When You're Off the Clock Embrace the Joys of Non-Digital Living

Many of us have jobs that require using a computer for many hours a day. Yet how often do you find yourself going home and scrolling social media, reading a recipe from your phone, doing pleasure reading from a tablet, or watching a movie on your laptop? All of these modern pleasures are fine in moderation, but why not look into some old-school methods of unwinding to give your eyes a break?

Get to know your public library, get some inspiring cookbooks, or take up a new hobby that doesn't require screens, like playing a musical instrument, knitting, or biking. You can even find ways of maintaining your passions but doing them in non-digital ways, such as journaling with a pen and a notebook instead of using a computer. Introducing these simple but fulfilling joys into your life won't just give your eyes a rest—they might make you a lot more interesting at the water cooler or your next social gathering!
