LipiFlow
Meibomian glands are responsible for producing the oil that, along with water and mucus, makes up tears. Meibomian gland dysfunction caused by blockages is a leading cause of dry eyes. Advancements in technology now allow for the safe removal of these blockages using a treatment device called LipiFlow®. Dr. Walter Choate in Nashville, TN, uses this device to help patients achieve lasting relief from painful symptoms. LipiFlow treatments are nonsurgical, short (around 12 minutes), and comfortable. Most patients describe the treatments as feeling like their eyelids are being gently massaged.
Benefits of LipiFlow
LipiFlow can offer:
- Improved oil production
- Relief from eye irritation
- Easy treatments
- Improved quality of vision
- A painless procedure
If you have been experiencing any of these symptoms for a prolonged period, we invite you to schedule a consultation at our optometrist's office in Goodlettsville, TN. By examining your eyes and reviewing your medical history, we can determine if LipiFlow or another dry eye treatment is the best way to help you achieve improved tear quality and significant relief.
Are You a Candidate?
During your initial examination, Dr. Choate will perform a series of tests at our Nashville clinic to evaluate gland performance. You may be asked to complete a questionnaire about symptoms as well.
Most patients describe the treatments as feeling like their eyelids are being gently massaged.
Individuals with a long history of meibomian gland dysfunction may be ideal candidates for this treatment. These glands can become clogged over the years as solidified oil or other obstructions reduce the amount of natural oil that can reach the tear-film. These oils are necessary to prevent tears from evaporating too quickly. There are around 25 to 40 such glands in the upper eyelid and 20 to 30 in the lower eyelid.
Older individuals often benefit from LipiFlow because the risk of meibomian gland dysfunction increases with age. A study found that out of 233 adults of an average age of 63, almost 60% were experiencing meibomian gland dysfunction.
Candidates for this procedure often have the following symptoms:
- Itchy eyes
- Red eyes
- Blurred vision
- Sensitivity to light
- Discomfort while blinking
How LipiFlow Works
LipiFlow activators are placed onto the eyelids. They use a combination of heat and mild pressure to remove obstructions such as crystallized oils. LipiFlow treatments unblock these glands and allow your eyes to naturally lubricate themselves. Most patients notice improvements in six to eight weeks.
